Jamil Fofanah

Regional Director, Law & Policy - Africa

Jamil serves as the Regional Director, Law and Policy (Africa) at CGSL where he oversees current developments and tracking of all sustainability-related laws and regulations on the African continent. He is an international criminal and environmental lawyer currently pursuing a doctorate degree in law (S.J.D.) at Pace University’s Elisabeth Haub School of Law, where his research focuses on ecocide and environmental crimes.

Jamil’s practice and scholarship focus on the intersection of international justice, environmental law, and sustainability law. His areas of expertise include international criminal law, climate change, migration, energy law, sports law, business law, human rights, and the connection between global constitutional law and democratic governance.

He has published extensively on these subjects, notably on the intersection of Ecocide and Corporate Law and the relationship between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Africa. Jamil embodies a unique global perspective, having received advanced legal training in three jurisdictions in Africa, Europe, and North America.

His background also includes experience as a human rights journalist and as a secondary school history and governance administration teacher in Sierra Leone.
