International Trade Law and Development

We are shaping the legal foundations of international trade law and development, driving fairer regulatory alignment, strengthening the credibility of sustainability‑related trade measures, and supporting rules that enable inclusive global growth: Our ongoing initiative focuses on:

1. Sustainability Standards and Market Access:

We examine how private sustainability certification systems -designed to advance environmental and social objectives – can also operate as de facto technical barriers to trade, disproportionately affecting producers in developing countries. This pillar focuses on the legal interplay between voluntary standards, WTO Rules, and equitable market participation.

2. Translating Space Sustainability into National Regulation:

We analyze how global soft‑law instruments, such as international space debris mitigation guidelines, are transformed into binding domestic regulation. By comparing national approaches, this pillar explores how emerging sectors navigate the shift from voluntary norms to enforceable legal obligations.

3. Unilateral Environmental Trade Measures and Development Impacts:

We assess the rise of unilateral regulatory measures, focusing on the EU Deforestation Regulation, and their implications for environmental protection, trade law compliance, and socio‑economic outcomes in developing exporting countries. This pillar evaluates the legal tensions between environmental ambition and development equity.

Our goal here is to advance the legal underpinnings of international trade and development by examining regulatory alignment, market‑access integrity, and the evolving frameworks that govern sustainability‑related trade measures. Through this work, we translate global trade and environmental commitments into enforceable legal outcomes that support equitable development – guided by three strategic pillars.
