Human Rights Law & Policy

How does the law protect the human rights of people around in a just transition?

At CGSL, we examine how the law safeguards the fundamental rights of people living through the rapid shift to a low‑carbon economy. We operate from the principle that a transition is only truly “sustainable” when it is also just. Our work analyzes the intersection of human rights and environmental protection, identifying the legal safeguards needed to prevent a “green squeeze” – situations in which climate action unintentionally triggers land dispossession, labor exploitation, or the further marginalization of vulnerable communities. By unpacking international human rights treaties and national labor frameworks, we chart a legal roadmap that ensures the global move toward a greener future is anchored in equity, dignity, and non‑regression of rights.

Our expertise also bridges corporate operations with social accountability. We focus on the “glocal” application of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) across supply chains for critical minerals and renewable energy infrastructure. Acting as legislative architects, CGSL develops legal frameworks that mandate rigorous human rights due diligence and create effective pathways to remedy for affected communities. Whether analyzing “hard law” on modern slavery or “soft law” standards for stakeholder engagement, our mission remains constant: ensuring that the rule of law protects people as strongly as it protects the planet.

To navigate these complexities, our strategic focus includes:

  • The Just Transition Framework: Legal protections for workers and communities affected by industrial decarbonization.
  • Business & Human Rights (BHR): Legal intelligence on mandatory human rights due diligence (mHRDD) and corporate liability for abuses within global supply chains.
  • Environmental Justice & Land Rights: Examination of legal safeguards for Indigenous peoples and local communities as green infrastructure expands.
  • Remedy & Accountability: Mapping judicial and non‑judicial grievance mechanisms available to individuals and communities harmed by corporate activity
