Sustainability in the African Context
CGSL is committed to advancing a distinctly African model of sustainability – one that recognizes the continent’s unique vulnerability to climate change, its strategic importance to the global energy transition, and the need for equity, accountability, and autonomy in resource governance. Our strategic approach on the continent examines:
1. Climate Change & Energy Transition:
Africa emits the least yet suffers the most from climate impacts, even as it holds minerals essential for the global transition. CGSL focuses on legal frameworks that (i) ensure Africa benefits from its critical minerals through local processing and value addition, (ii) accelerate distributed renewable energy systems by modernizing regulatory environments, and (iii) strengthen access to transparent climate finance for large-scale mitigation and adaptation.
2. Corporate Governance in Mining & Oil:
Sustainable development in Africa depends heavily on reforming governance in the extractive sector. CGSL works to promote transparency and anti‑corruption measures, strengthen corporate accountability through mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence, and support the design of sovereign wealth funds that protect resource revenues for long-term, intergenerational development.
3. Decolonizing ESG Frameworks:
Global ESG standards often overlook Africa’s socioeconomic realities. CGSL is developing an ESG paradigm that is locally grounded; reflecting African development priorities, community rights, informal sector dynamics, and the continent’s pathway toward industrialization, while maintaining global best practices.
Our goal is to strengthen the legal foundations of Africa’s sustainability agenda by examining the regulatory, economic, and governance frameworks that shape the continent’s response to climate change, natural‑resource management, and global environmental norms. Working collaboratively with African governments, institutions, and stakeholders, we translate continental priorities and global sustainability commitments into enforceable legal outcomes that advance equitable, locally grounded development.
